Dr Simon Gillings
Position
Research Ecologist, Terrestrial Ecology Unit
Role
I work on a range of large-scale and land-use related issues including single-species surveys, atlases and fieldwork centred on key applied questions.
Qualifications
BSc (Hons) Ecology, University of East Anglia, 1992-1995
PhD Diurnal and nocturnal ecology of Golden Plovers Pluvialis apricaria and Lapwings Vanellus vanellus wintering on arable farmland, University of East Anglia, 1999-2003
Research Interests / Responsibilities
I design, implement, analyse and report on large-scale surveys, liaise and collaborate on the use of such data and undertake intensive studies of certain wader species. I have a major role in the development and analysis of the 2007-2011 Bird Atlas. I have a long-standing interest in the winter ecology of Golden Plovers and Lapwings and am coordinator of an International Golden Plover Survey planned for October 2008. I am interested in foraging behaviour and with other BTO staff collaborate with researchers in the USA on foraging and staging ecology of migratory shorebirds in Delaware Bay. I am also involved in monitoring the development of bird communities in upland scrub.
