Local Avifaunas and Atlases
A selective list of the major avifaunal works covering each county and an almost comprehensive list of county atlases. Only separate publications which cover the entire county and provide more or less comprehensive detail (as it was known) on all birds in the county have (mostly) been listed. Many more works have been published, some little more than annotated species lists, notably in local natural history society journals, or (for England) in works such as the Victoria County History series. Works detailing only a particular area within a county, or describing only rare birds are generally also not listed. For full details of these and others, see David Ballance's excellent Birds in Counties (Imperial College Press, London: 1996 and updates) from which much of this list is derived. Counties, for the most part, are listed as they were in the 1974 re-organisation, which should be familiar to most; apologies to those who prefer different delineations. Those held in the BTO library are indicated by the relevant class mark in square brackets Thus Birds in Counties may be found at [028 BAL]. In tandem with the national atlas, many counties are undertaking field work for a local atlas - see a list of these local atlases.
